3 things that break us
These are mental traits that can be conquered.
- First, putting off decisions and action until a later period.
| James 4:13-16 |
Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we
will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get
gain: 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What
is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time,
and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the
Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. 16 But now
ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. |
| Proverbs 27:1 |
Boast not thyself of to-morrow; For thou knowest
not what a day may bring forth. |
This character never decides anything when a decision is
demanded. You face a great crisis in your life.
You know you ought to make yourself mentally proficient along a certain
branch of study. You are filled with enthusiasm until you take up the books.
Then you say, "I'll start this tomorrow." The moment you say that,
you are defeated.
Usually, one might just as well throw his books into the fire, because
tomorrow he will repeat himself. The secret of winning is action.
Remember: No football-team ever won a game by relaxing
A second enemy is mental laziness.
| Proverbs 6:6 |
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways,
and be wise |
| Proverbs 30:24-28 |
There are four things which are little upon the
earth, But they are exceeding wise: 25 The ants are a people
not strong, Yet they provide their food in the summer; 26 The
conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks;
27 The locusts have no king, Yet go they forth all of them by
bands; 28 The lizard taketh hold with her hands, Yet is she in
kings’ palaces. |
This is widespread. It is the line of least resistance
and can be cured only by the sternest methods. The You that is in you is the
real master of your mental processes. The You that is in you is the You the
world is seeking.
You must give it its place of authority, of dominion over your faculties.
Now drive your mind to work. You absolutely refuse to give it any rest until
it has accomplished the desired amount of work. You must be absolute master
of yourself, of your faculties, for your mind will always be lazy until
interest has been created. Then it flows on smoothly.
A third enemy is wrong talking, negative talking.
| Proverbs 10:31 |
The mouth of the righteous bringeth forth
wisdom; But the perverse tongue shall be cut off. |
| Proverbs 18:21 |
Death and life are in the power of the tongue;
And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. |
| Proverbs 21:23 |
Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue Keepeth
his soul from troubles. |
I knew a man who started out in business with every
promise of success. He had the right location. He had the right kind of
business. He had a multitude of friends. He was a good buyer and a good
salesman.
When I visited his country I went into his store on my way to the Post
Office nearly every morning. I used to admire his store. It was
tidy and clean. The details were so carefully managed.
But a change came over him. He had a little domestic difficulty.
He began to talk discouragingly.' In no time that man talked himself
out of a splendid, growing business. He simply talked himself out.
He discouraged people who came in. He was full of pessimism and doubt.
He challenged everything. Finally he talked himself into absolute
failure. You cannot afford to talk failure, doubt or fear.
Why? Because words register in your heart and after they have
registered, they take control of your life.
